I began the year in New York City, going out to duck with Uncle JB, his now-fiance, and a collection of what are now some decent friends. January was a wash until the end.
February, I went to Seattle, and met @illidanstr. He’d go on to run Dead Hand Path logistics. In the meanwhile, he invited me to a sweet party where I met @gasmaskaesthetic. After this, there were hangouts with @mathemagicalschema and others. There was tea and cider, and later in the following week, Hamilton, gin, and many hangovers.
Around this time, the shitty former manager got laid off in a company reduction in force, which appears to be the way my company gets rid of people who really ought to be fired.
I visited Portland with Choirboy, and California for work and more time with Choirboy - then proceeded to eat dinner and have drinks with a number of great people. I spent March in a frenzy of activity. Way too much of March and February were taken up moderating a rationalist-adjacent Discord server and dealing with the attendant drama that happens when you put more than thirty nerds together in the same room.
The roommate moved in sometime in March. The roommate departed sometime in July. My streak of positive experiences living with someone remains at a solid zero.
I spent a decent amount of time on the road this year. I saw @nikkifromtabs in DC and spent time geeking out over greenhouses. I spent time with family in Portland. I visited Atlanta for the first time and had excellent dinner parties, and attended my first oyster roast.
Burning Man put on an exhibit at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian, and it was quite good. Burning Man itself went relatively well, but there’s nothing like arriving on playa and discovering that you really dislike being a camp administrator. Dead Hand lives on, run by people who came into the Burn via Dead Hand. What it becomes in the future will be fascinating to watch.
I drove cross-country: I visited CONvergence for the first time in a long time.
Quite a few close friends and family came into my life: a number of people exited. I spent two months post-Burn trying to figure out if I was being broken up with, and ended up having to go get the answer myself from choirboy. One more casualty in the Brent Dill fiasco, I guess. The roommate exited, save for many, many toll notices which are still being delivered on a weekly basis.
My father wound up in the hospital for the eleventh time, again due to a persistent 15 year old leg wound gone infected. He also spent a good deal of the year living in hotels. He is now in an apartment, and aside from one other brush with infection (this time in the back), appears to be as healthy as he ever is.
Here in the end of the year, I’m dealing with the death of CAT-6 and the following explosion by my cleaning person after his being fired. I’m spending more time talking to police and lawyers than I ever have in my life, and have briefly debated moving and/or weaponry.
I went to Solstice in Eugene and had a lovely time derailed only slightly by too much time spent worrying about the aforementioned cleaner situation. Too much vodka was had. Flights were delayed. Friends were seen.
Christmas was lovely, and spent with a good collection of chosen family and friends.
This was a great year until the last four months of it. While there was a lot to enjoy, I’m just as glad to see the back of it.
